Slam Poetry

So I just realized that I've posted a good number of Slam Poems but I've never actually taken the time to explain to all of you what Slam Poetry actually is. Luckily, I had the opportunity to give a brief lesson on Slam during a friend's creative writing college course so I made a handy hand-out. Without further ado, here you go:

A quick Taste of the SLAM revolution

“What is Slam?” From the Founder Marc Kelly Smith:
"Competitive poetry.
That's what slam is.
I looked it up on Wikipedia."

When the uninitiated hear the term "slam poetry," they say "slam what?" or serve up the quick and easy answer quoted above or the equally facile interpretation that slam is "rap without music—what Eminem did in 8 Mile or what that singer Grande Corde Malade does in France." Chances are they got a taste of slam at the French Nationals or at the Starry Plough in Berkeley, but it was only a taste. A deeper drink would tell them more. And here's that drink, served up by the Slampapi himself:

Slams are captivating poetry events that focus a live audience's attention on the presentation of poetry that's been composed, polished, and rehearsed for the purpose of being performed—very often in a competitive arena, but not always. It's a carnival, a pageant, an interactive classroom, a town hall meeting, a con game, a versified boxing match, and a churchlike revival that electrifies and animates the people listening to and watching it.

Competitive slam poets battle against one another like wrestlers vying for a championship belt. Each poet takes his or her turn onstage to play at proving their superiority as both poet and performer. The audience is prompted to get involved, and it does! Crowds have been known to roar approval or stomp their boots in scorn for the poetics they love or pretend to hate.

Excerpted from: Smith, Marc Kelly, and Joe Kraynak. Take the Mic: The Art of Performance Poetry, Slam, and the Spoken Word. Naperville, Ill.: Source MediaFusion, 2009. Print.

The kicking, screaming birth of slam:

  • In the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, even the biggest names and most famous poets were facing dwindling audiences due to the stiff, formal, monotonous, and even flat-out-boring nature of poetry readings (usually in libraries or bookstores)
  • So what changed? Passion! Power! Performance! Marc Kelly Smith wanted to steer spoken poetry away from the highly specialized (or often non-existent) audience of highbrow poetry aficionados to the general public.
  • It worked! Despite the scoffers and naysayers, Smith started hosting ‘Poetry Slams’ in Chicago during the summer of 1986 at the Get Me High Lounge.
  • Just three years later, in 1989, Smith had kicked off the National Slam competition in San Francisco. By the competition’s second year (back in Chicago) it had sold out to over 700 audience members – the biggest poetry event The Windy City had witnessed in decades.
  • Today, Poetry Slam competitions and Slam open mic nights are held all over the world from Boston to Bosnia.

Information pulled from: Smith, Marc Kelly. The Spoken Word Revolution: Slam, Hip-hop & the Poetry of a New Generation. Naperville, Ill.: Source MediaFusion, 2003. Print.

The “RULES” of slam:

While the rules can be different depending on where you go, and Slam is more about creative performance than competition, but there are a few generally adhered to “rules.”

  1. 3 Minute Cap – Limiting slammers to three minutes per poem (with a ten second grace period) keeps Slams from falling back into the stagnant territory of poetry readings where authors might drone on for upwards of ten or fifteen minutes (usually losing their audience’s attention on the way).
  2. Audience Judges – Judging is generally done in two ways (but both are audience based)
    1. Audience members are pulled at random by the host and asked to judge.
    2. The host judges whose Slam was best by audience feedback (clapping, thumbs up, stomping etc.)
  3. Scored 0 – 10 – If judging is done via the 2a method above, judges usually grade on a scale of 0-10 which can occasionally go up to 30 or even infinite if a Slammer knocks it out of the park.
  4. What do I win? – Slam prizes can be anything from a free drink to a bunch of money but mostly Slammers participate to get their poems out there and try to win for bragging rights and respect.

Hats and Sunbeams in February

It's one o'clock and time to leave work. I throw on my coat and gloves and pull on the crocheted 'My Neighbour Totoro' hat that my mom made me for my birthday. I push open the back door to Robert Frost building on the Southern New Hampshire University campus. I'm twenty-five, it's February, and I'm single.

The sun has been engulfed by the dense grey clouds above and the sidewalk is glazed with snow and ice. I shuffle along past Belknap building and hold my breath inconspicuously when I come to the exit where the international students crowd to smoke and speak into their cellphones in loud foreign languages. The air is stifled there by the strange brands of cigarettes that reek of some inexplicable smell, like burnt pine needles or sour evergreen. Once I'm clear, I let out my breath and descend the stairs.

I come to the large stone memorial plaque, dedicated to the school by the class of some-year-or-another, and stand at the edge of the crosswalk. I look left, then right, then left once more before I start to cross. That's when I see her. She is bundled up in a warm winter coat with the hood pulled just over her head. Her sandy blonde hair falling around the sides of her face and disappearing beneath a warm-looking plaid scarf.

She tilts her face up and I see her green eyes brighten in recognition from behind her glasses. But it's not me she recognizes.

Genius Idea: Frozen Yogurt + Hot Cereal

So here's a random blog post for you. I was driving home from work and I passed by my local frozen yogurt (or 'FroYo' for those who don't have time to speak or type full words) place and I got to wondering: what do they do in the winter time? I should probably clarify that I live in the northeast of USA where winter = lots of snow. And lots of snow = low demand for frozen yogurt.

So what, do they just close up for the winter and cut their losses? I know there are a number of seasonal businesses but that seems kind of crazy to me. And that got me thinking, what could they sell in the winter time so that they could stay open? Then it hit me: Hot cereal (or porridge or oatmeal or whatever you want to call it).

I stole this picture from Panera.

The Perfect Pair,
Together at Last

I know it might sound weird at first but stay with me for a minute here. Most frozen yogurt places are set up so that they have a little topping buffet area with fresh fruit, granola, nuts, etc. What would go great on a hot bowl of cereal? Fresh fruit, granola, nuts, and etc!

Beautiful Things Don't Ask For Attention (Including Slam Poem - Designed)

I want to start this post off with two doses of honesty. 1: I love technology: computers, movies, video games, all that great stuff. 2: I spend too much time sitting in front of screens. It's slightly ironic that a film, in part, opened my eyes to this but that's beside the point. The movie I'm talking about is The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. If you haven't seen it yet, go now before it's completely out of theaters and turns all 'ghost cat' for a few months during that in-between the silver-screen and home screen period.

Yes, the film has been called heavy-handed on the 'go live your life' mantra, and it is a bit on the formulaic side, but it more than makes up for both of these so-called 'issues' with it's genuine, inspiring heart and soul, as well as its beautiful cinematography and score/soundtrack.

Interestingly enough, before I even went to go see the film I had been ruminating on the idea of the inherent beauty in this world, and how we often miss it because we're so busy texting and computing and worrying about what we have to do next. The awakening, or renaissance (just because I love that word), came about when I started my car a few months ago and looked up to see that my windshield was covered in the most beautiful design of frost and snowflakes. It looked like someone had taken a spirograph and mathematically calculated out a design entirely unique and specific to my ol' Trailblazer's windshield.

This was a few days before I heard the news that Paul Walker had died. Scanning through some of the articles that were posted in the aftermath, I found two beautiful quotes from the much-loved celebrity, humanitarian, and generally all-around nice guy:

Do You Remember?

Do You Remember When I Used to Have a Blog That One Time?

It's funny how the best of intentions mean nothing if you don't follow through. You know how people always say "well it's the thought that counts"? I don't think that's right. I think it's the following through with that thought that counts. Are you picking up on the hypocriticism... hypocriticality... hypocriticalness... the fact that I'm being hypocritical here? If not, take a moment to see the date of my last post. I'll wait.

Okay, are you back? Good. Yeah, I feel like a blogger that posts every two and a half years is probably not going to get very many people to read his or her work. Either that or the uber-elusive nature and low-to-non-existent frequency is so tantalizing that this very post will receive thousands of views because of the incredible anticipation (that's my understanding of supply and demand, anyway) I've kept my fanbase waiting in. What is the minimum number of fans required to call it a 'fanbase' anyway?

Okay, so before I lose you with my ramblings - but really that's why you came, right? - this is all to say that I intend to start blogging again. (Please hold your applause until the end of the post). So expect more writing snippets, rambling thoughts, slam poems, movie/game/book/music talk and reviews, and of course general shenanigans and I'll do my best not to disappoint you.

Before you move on to the newer posts with actual writing content in them, though, I thought perhaps I should give a brief update of what I've been up to in those past two and a half years. And so as not to bore you (further), I'll do it in semi-Seussical rhyme.

The Comeback Kid

Hello everyone!

I'm still here. I know you were worried about me, but I've been doing fine - just a lot of school work, homework, and work work. Luckily my classes are done by May 6th and then I'll have the WHOLE summer to post random little blogs, thoughts, ideas, videos, lists, and everything else that is awesome. In the mean time though I wanted to blog about two very random different things.

Lousy Smarch Weather

So here I am again with another Simpsons reference (in case you missed it) because I feel like it pretty much sums up what's been going on here in New Hampshire - lots and lots of snow and rain. Luckily my school hasn't been canceled despite me wishing as hard as I can x_.x. But hey it's March 1st, that's exciting right? I thought I'd just do a quick little update/blog post. I guess the first thing I should talk about is the Academy Awards (and thanks to everyone who came over and watched them - I had a great night!). So I have to say it was probably one of the most unsurprising Oscars I have seen. The King's Speech pretty much swept as everyone expected it to. It was, however, nice to see Inception win best Cinematography (and rightly so). Not too much else to say here really other than the obvious about Hailee Steinfeld being robbed (even though I knew it was going to happen it doesn't make it any less annoying).

Still Alive (and Oscar Picks)

Yes, like GLaDOS I am in fact still alive despite the fact that I haven't posted anything in over a week. Firstly, my apologies on that - I've actually been crazy busy between school and work. Secondly, the Oscars are tomorrow night! I've actually seen more than half of the picture nominees this year (haven't seen Black Swan, The Fighter, King's Speech, or The Kids Are All Right) and I must say I'm excited to find out who will win. I recently watched Winter's Bone and while it was incredibly slow I have to say that it definitely wasn't bad and I can see the nomination for Jennifer Lawrence being justified. Alongside Winter's Bone I also rented Megamind, The Road, and Paper Man (I'll attach links to those so you can follow them to their IMDBs).

Favorite Romantic Movie Scenes

So for Valentine's Day this year, since I sadly do not have a Valentine, I thought I would make a short list of my favorite romantic scenes from some of my favorite movies. Please realize that this is not a "Best Romantic Scenes" list - it is merely a list of scenes that I love (though I'm sure I'll forget many). They aren't in any particular order and I think this time (unlike my previous lists) I'm just going to post the video links and not explain why I love them... you should be able to figure it out :P So anyway, sit back, relax, and enjoy!

P.S. Indeed I am a hopeless romantic. I can't help it.
P.S.S. Spoiler alert!

My Arms Get Cold...

Oops, it's once again been over a week since I last posted! I really do apologize for that. I started working on a "Most Anticipated Films of 2011" list but it's taking longer than I anticipated. That and I've actually been really busy with school work. I did somehow manage to play through the last couple hours of Dead Space 2 though and I have to say it's absolutely fantastic. The ending was very well done and it was just an incredibly solid game throughout. I think I can honestly say I've never felt such a real feeling of anxiety and dread while playing a game. The only negative thing I can say about it really is that I probably shouldn't have played on hard my first time through... x_.x

So yes Valentine's Day is quickly approaching. And you know what's sad, I've never had a girlfriend over Valentine's Day :( I know, hard to believe right? What's that? It's not, you say? Well you don't have to be so mean about it. In all honesty it definitely would be nice to find that special someone but I'm hoping that all this waiting will make it that much more worth it when I do find her. And it would be nice to have someone to help my arms from getting cold in this February air. Anyway, I plan on making a special little post on good ol' Saint Valentine's Day so make sure you check back then.

Umm... I think that's basically it. Feel free to comment about whatever comes to mind. Have a great weekend!

Yeah, It's a Lazy, Dog-Dangling Afternoon

Yeah, it's a lazy dog-dangling afternoon.

So I guess the word of the week here in New Hampshire is "Snow." I think it's finally stopped out there but we've just received another two feet or so to add to the three or four that are already blanketing the state. On the bright side, when it finally stops snowing it looks dang beautiful out in the sun. On the even brighter side, school was once again canceled today which means that it's been another lazy day of staying in my warm pajamas and breaking up homework with movies, TV, and video games.

There's something inherently exciting about finding a new TV show that is really interesting and being able to watch entire seasons. That is why I love you, Netflix. Recently I watched the first two seasons of the Animal Planet series River Monsters. If you haven't seen it and have any interest in insanely large or strange fish then I would highly suggest it (make sure you have a strong stomach too though because it can get gross). The host, Jeremy Wade, is just plain awesome. Not only is he a biologist and "extreme angler" but he's definitely entertaining to watch and most episodes play out in a sort of "CSI" was-this-fish-really-the-murderer sort of way.

A Saucy Line Will Not Get You Far With Me

So if you haven't heard, the Oscar nominations for 2010 were announced a couple of days ago and I must say I'm very pleased with the results. Many of my favorite films of the year have been nominated but I think I was most happy to see that Hailee Steinfeld, the incredible young actress of only 14, was nominated for Best Supporting Actress (Mattie Ross in True Grit). I think it's a bit of a shame that she was not recognized as the lead actress of the film merely because of her age but it is certainly well deserved for a fantastic job nonetheless.

As usual I somehow missed the movie that received the most nominations (The King's Speech) but I did manage to see a fair amount of the other films nominated including 127 Hours - which I just saw yesterday. If you're unfamiliar with the film (which I think most people are at this point) it's an adaptation of the very true story about how hiker Aron Ralston became trapped under an 800 pound boulder for 5 days before amputating his own arm with a blunt pocket knife. As you can imagine, it's not the easiest film to watch, but with Danny Boyle (of Slumdog Millionaire fame) at the helm it was incredibly well done. James Franco received a nomination for Best Actor for his portrayal and I do believe it's also well deserved.

I think I'll actually keep this post short (which I always say but never do) and end it with this paragraph. I'm sure I'll talk more about the Oscars as they draw nearer and I will also try and post an update about what else I've been playing, watching, and generally what's been up in my life (spoiler alert: mostly school). Until then, have a great day and go read my older posts :P

Midnight Ponderings

I haven't done a plain old blog post in a while have I? It's all been lists and advertisements and blah blah blah. Well in honor of the fact that I'm still awake and it's 12:30 (WAAAAY past my bed-time) I thought I'd ramble on for a bit. Let's start with how I'm doing. Generally I'm feeling pretty well. School's started up again and it's been good so far. My new classes (Brit Lit, Ethics, Nonfiction Workshop, Humanities 2) all seem to be pretty solid and I think I'm going to have some fun this semester and learn a lot. There's definitely a couple places where I feel I'm struggling though and unfortunately those places are the most important ones.

The first is in a subtle loneliness. I feel as though I've come a very long way with my anxiety issues and the day to day but I often still feel lonely at times if I'm being honest with myself. I feel like I have a hard time making friends and meeting new people in New Hampshire. I love the friends I've made and appreciate everything they do but it seems like all my friends are from high school. Despite my best efforts I can't help feeling, at times, that I am per chance slightly unlovable.

Everything in the above paragraph leads into the second stumbling and struggling in my life - which is church. I'm not sure who's reading this or who will be reading this but I feel that I really need to find a church around here so if anybody has any ideas please let me know. I find it more and more difficult to find a solid church where I really fit in the older I get. Perhaps it's simply the changing times or the area I live in but it has been difficult nonetheless. I remember a few years ago feeling as though everything made sense and God had brought me to this point in my life after so many moves and changes for a reason. I still believe that but I feel like some of that feeling of direction has faded and I want to find it again.

Well before things get too depressing I should inform you that I received a letter the other day informing me that I'm on the President's List at my university after last semester's straight A's (w00t!) and every class I take I feel I am closer to becoming the writer I want to be. Speaking of which, I don't know if I've mentioned my novel much on here ("Hunting the Seven") but I am still working on it. I actually have a query letter worked out and the novel has been completely edited several times now. As I take new classes and grow in my writing though, and I can't help but go back for one more edit. Hopefully this summer will be the summer I finally send it out to some publishers and see if it'll catch. I really feel like I'm finally ready.

I'd say that's probably enough rambling for now though so I'll leave you with a song to inspire (though it may not seem like it at first). Deathbed by Relient K is by far one of my favorite songs of all time. Here it is:

Make sure you listen to and read the incredible lyrics. God's grace is completely and wholly awesome and undeniable.

I'd also like to share another one of my all-time favorite songs that I share with everyone. Some of the best advice I can think of. Enjoy!

Listen Bud, He's Got Radioactive Blood!

I thought I'd do just a little post here in honor of everyone's favorite wall-crawler since I haven't done a non-2010 list post in nearly a month. Before I get to what I have to say about Peter Parker and his web-slinging alter-ego though, why don't I fill everyone in on what's been going on.

Gentry Update: Well firstly, I went up to Montreal with my friend Eric last weekend and it was a blast. We didn't really do much other than eat at some sweet restaurants (La Belle Province, Cote St. Luc, and Tim Horton's ftw) and see Season of the Witch - which I really wouldn't suggest... and I LIKE Nicolas Cage unlike most people - at le colisée (the coliseum - a huge movie theatre). We tried to go to the Biodome in downtown Montreal but it was obviously only closed on Mondays in January and February... probably just for us. Anyway we plan on going back probably in the summer since I don't know if Spring Break will work (and it won't be snowing in the summer... hopefully...). Oh I also was lucky enough to see a bunch of my old friends (miss you guys!).

Top 10 Albums of 2010

The Top 10 Albums of 2010

I don't claim to be a musical entrepreneur nor do I claim to really know anything about the technically good qualities of an album but I do enjoy music of many genres and listen to a fair amount of songs every day. That being said, feel free to mock, laugh, agree - pretty much whatever you please - with the following 10 albums that were my personal favorites of the year.

11: Lights - Acoustic EP

I know, I know, an EP is probably not technically an album and that is the reason it's at number eleven. Regardless of this fact, however, I absolutely love these five songs and have listened to them numerous times in the past six months. If you haven't heard of Lights, or have only heard her debut album, I highly suggest you try out her acoustic EP, as it is fantastic!

Filmography 2010

Hey everyone,
So I mentioned in my last post that I'd be working on year end lists for movies, games and possibly more. Well I've compiled a couple lists that still need some work (and I'm waiting to see a couple more movies before I decide) but in the mean time, to get you excited let's take a look at this incredibly awesome youtube video of the movies of 2010. Enjoy!

Also, in case you're curious the editor and creator of this incredible video has compiled a neat list of all the films used in this short video here. So what was your favorite film? Top ten?

Turn on the LIGHTS

Hey everyone, just a quick little update today because I'm waiting for a class to start and I have a bit of free time with my laptop.

So what's new? Let's see... well exams are coming up so I guess that's exciting or whathaveyou. Oh I'm also 3 seasons into Eureka (Syfy original) thanks to Netflix and I have to say it's pretty great (why else would I watch 3 seasons?). If you've never heard of it, it's a bit like Fringe meets Psych... weird science experiments but more light-hearted and funny. If that sound interesting I would definitely suggest it - oh and don't worry it's nothing like the Syfy original movies. (<- That link has hilarious but graphic content).

What else? Well I've still been playing Black Ops, Donkey Kong Country Returns, and a handful of other games. I might write up some reviews on those as well if I get enough hits and comments on the Kirby one (or if I'm just bored).

As far as the rest of life goes nothing too exciting, but by now you're probably pretty confused about the title of this blog so I'll explain it simply: Valerie "LIGHTS" Poxleitner is the most adorable human being on the face of the planet AND she's a fantastic musician AND she's from Toronto, Canada. So I'm pretty sure I'm in love.

If you haven't heard of her you need to listen and watch below.

And here is LIGHTS being ridiculously cute.

Poetry Portfolio

So I realized I haven't really posted too much of my actual writing on this blog yet and thought that I'd randomly choose tonight to do so (that way I also keep it from going another week without a post). Just a quick little update and brief overview before I get to copying and pasting below.

Firstly, I finally completely beat Kirby's Epic Yarn (100% completion... w00t) and I have to say that it is quite fantastic. I have fallen in love with the soundtrack and spent a large amount of time trying to find it to put on my iPod yesterday.

Lazy Sunday

Yikes, it's been over a week since I posted anything. I definitely apologize for that. To be honest I haven't really been on my computer much lately - other than to write papers and such for classes of course. I think most of my computer time has morphed into Netflix and gaming time. Which is a good segue into what I've been watching and playing I suppose.
